MIDDLE SCHOOL
Middle School Curriculum
ELA:
Teachers of students in grades six will use the Collections Anthology series by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Novel Studies in English Language Arts classes. Collection materials support the mastery of the New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Standards through the use of anchor texts and supporting texts in a variety of genres; classical and contemporary texts (including digital sources): informational and fictional texts; texts that are culturally diverse; and texts that present a range of complexity to provide multiple access points to learners.
Social Studies:
The New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework is designed to prepare students for college, careers, and civic life with courses that are rigorous and aligned to New York State Learning Standards, both Common Core and Social Studies. It incorporates the New York State Common Core Learning Standards and recommends the use of the C3 Inquiry Arc as instructional methodology. Social Studies practices are identified, as well as the key ideas, conceptual understandings, and content specifications.
Social Studies is based on the geography and history of the Eastern Hemisphere, including:
-
The development of cultures
-
Civilizations, and empires
-
Interactions between societies
-
The comparison of trends in government and economics. It also incorporates some elements of other social sciences
The course begins with an examination of the Eastern Hemisphere today using geographic skills. This provides the foundation for making connections between the past and present throughout the course. The remainder of the course is divided into seven Key Ideas that cover a time span from prehistory into the 1300s. Students are provided the opportunity to explore belief systems across time and to examine the foundations of democracy.
Science:
Green Tech Charter School provides all students with science experiences that are:
· Developmentally-appropriate
· A foundation for more advanced ideas that prepare them for college and/or careers
Green Tech Charter School uses NYS Department of Education Science Scope and Sequence for sixth grade. Here is a list of science skills students learn in the sixth grade. These skills are organized into categories:
-
Matter and mass, Heat and thermal energy, Force and motion, Physical and chemical change, Atoms and molecules, Solutions, Chemical reactions, Biochemistry, Classification, Genetics
-
Plant reproduction, Cells, Ecology, Traits and adaptations, Rocks and minerals, Plate tectonics
-
Weather, Climate change, Water cycle, Topographic maps, Engineering practices, Science practices, Units and measurement.
Math:
Green Tech Middle School uses NYS Common Core Mathematics Curriculum. Sixth grade mathematics is about (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.
Key Areas of Focus for Grade 6: Ratios and proportional reasoning; early expressions and equations.
